Wesleyan University

freeman athletic center

Middletown, Connecticut

In the fall of 2023, Wesleyan University embarked on a study of their Freeman Athletic Center, prompted by an escalating strain on their existing facility due to their robust varsity athletic programs, a sharp growth in their club and intramural sports, and an increased interest in general wellness by their campus community. Following an assessment of their current challenges and aspirations, a program was developed that doubled their fitness space and added flexible wellness studios, supporting locker rooms, staff spaces, and a new recreational basketball court that can function for larger events.

A proposed new addition locates these programs at a primary pedestrian access route, providing a renewed first impression of wellness on campus. The new space is envisioned to offer generous natural light and materiality, while providing ample space for students to gather, study, and refresh, building a robust community within this new campus amenity.
